On November 18th, The Big Red Men traveled to Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania to compete in the first MACFA tournament of the year, the A vs. B meet. The Red were pitted up against Army, Haverford College, Stevens Institute of Technology, NJIT and Yeshiva. The Big Red went 3-2 on the day, beating Army, Haverford and Yeshiva and losing to Stevens and NJIT. The sabre squad for the A vs. B meet was Captain Zach Silversmith, Benjamin Jaeger and Matthew Laks. The new-look foil squad included junior Matt Joe, and freshmen Dalton Kamish and Austin Chien. The epee squad was comprised of junior Harrison Fox, sophomore Adam Kirsch and freshman Jonathan Lowry. The first match of the day was against Stevens.
The sabre squad went 8-1 against an annually strong Stevens sabre squad. The Epee squad secured 3 victories in their first match of the season. The foil squad had a tough start to their season however, unable to secure a victory in their first matchup. CORNELL 11 - STEVENS 16
The next competitor for the Red was NJIT. Fielding talented squads in all three weapons, the Red knew that the matchup would be an exciting one. The sabre squad was able to secure 4 victories for the Red, in what would prove to be their toughest match-up of the day. The epee squad found incredible success against NJIT, going 6-2 and putting the Red in a position to win the meet with 4 wins in foil. Unfortunately, the foil squad fell short by one bout, going 3-6 against NJIT.CORNELL 13 – NJIT 14
Following an extremely close, nail-biter of a bout against NJIT, the Red took on Hunter College. Luckily for Cornell, Hunter did not field a foil squad, which ensured 9 wins for the Red. The sabre squad won 7 of their 9 bouts, and the epee squad won 5. CORNELL 21 - HUNTER 6
Next, Cornell took on Yeshiva University. Cornell has dominated Yeshiva over the last number of years, and once again had a dominating victory against Yeshiva. The sabre squad went 7-2, epee 6-3, and the foil squad 9-0. CORNELL 22 – YESHIVA 5
The final bout of the day for the Big Red was against Army. 2-2 on the day so far, Cornell was pumped up to win their final match-up and leave the tournament with a winning record. Army is an extremely talented and athletic squad within the MACFA conference and the Red knew they needed to give it their all to pull out a win. The sabre squad laid down the foundation for Cornell’s victory securing 8 wins against the army squad. Senior Zach Silversmith and sophomore Matthew Laks went 3-0 in sabre to lead the way to their 8-1 squad record. Army’s strongest squad is their epee squad, and the Big Red had some trouble against their talented squad, dropping 8 bouts and going 1-8. Before foil, the match score was 9-8, meaning that the victor will be determined in foil. The foil squad absolutely delivered, providing 5 critical wins against Army. Junior Matt Joe and freshmen Dalton Kamish and Austin Chien all provided critical victories to lead Cornell to the impressive win. CORNELL 14 – ARMY 13. Cornell did very well on the day, and will be heading to Johns Hopkins in February for their A vs. C MACFA meet. Stay tuned for our report from Hopkins!
