The Cornell Men’s Fencing Club traveled to Hartford, CT for the 2012 USACFC Championships (United States Association of Collegiate Fencing Clubs). We placed 3rd out of 35 men’s programs. The Sabre squad finished the weekend 68-3 on their way to a national title. The Foil squad finished 5th and the Epee squad finished 9th. It was a great weekend and a great end to the fencing careers of Seniors Nick Heiner, Bryan Mills, and Tim Gao.

Individually, The sabre squad medalled all three fencers with Freshman Matthew Laks placing first and Juniors Benjamin Jaeger and Zach Silversmith finishing 3rd and 6th respectively. In foil, Senior Nick Heiner finished 5th individually.

On the first day of competition the sabre squad dominated in the pools, receiving the number 1 seed for the elimination round . They steamrolled the competition to finish the day 33-0 with all three fencers qualifying for the individual round. Foil dropped 3 bouts in pools and also received the number 1 seed going into the second day of competition. Epee fenced well, receiving the number 13 seed for the elimination round.

1st Place Saber Squad

Individually, all three Sabre fencers were placed in the same preliminary pool, and all advanced to the final pool. In the final pool, Freshman Matthew Laks won a 5 touch fence off for first 5-4 against an opponent who just minutes earlier had defeated him 5-4 to force the fence off. His 1st place finish individually is the first for CUMFC in at least 5 years. Junior Benjamin Jaeger finished 3rd with a strong showing, and classmate Zachary Silversmith finished 6th.

The second day of competition was a direct elimination tableau with all spots fenced out. Sabre won each match on route to a national title. Their record on the second day was 35-3, with all three losses coming in the semi-finals to a strong UMASS squad. Foil reached the round of eight, but fell to eventual 4th place Florida 5-3. They then went on to defeat Northwestern and USMA to earn fifth place. Epee ran into eventual 3rd place finisher Dartmouth in the round of 16 and was defeated 5-1, but won each subsequent match against UVA, UMASS and ECU to finish 9th.

With these finishes, the Red finished 3rd overall for the 2nd time in 3 years. We would like to thank all the friends, family, and alumni of CUMFC for their generous support over the 2011-12 season. Our season will start again in November with the Temple Open in Philadelphia, PA. We hope to see you there!
