Big Red Places Third (out of 37) at USACFC Nationals 2010
The Cornell Men’s Fencing Club traveled to Swarthmore College in Philadelphia to compete against 41 other schools from around the country. Over the course of the first day, our three squads all fared well, all placing in the top 16 going into direct eliminations. Individually, Sophomore Mike Fotinatos in foil, Freshmen Benjamin Jaeger and Zach Silversmith in sabre, and Sophomore Bryan Mills in epee all qualified for the first round of individuals. Mike, Benjamin and Zach all advanced to the final round with strong performances in their respective pools. At the end of the first day, all three squads had advanced into the round of 16 in their respective brackets.
On the second day, we returned to the venue to finish up the direct elimination table and the individual finals. In foil and sabre, Cornell handily defeated its first opponents with epee losing to the eventual number 2 team UMich.
Foil advanced into the round of four where it fell to Northwestern University, the eventual first place foil and overall team, and ended up placing fourth one year after capturing the first place trophy.
Sabre made it to the round of eight with Sophomore Tim Gao on C strip, even though all his previous fencing experience had been in epee. They ended up losing and finishing eighth.
Epee, after losing in the round of 16 to UMich, went on to defeat its next two opponents 5-0 and 5-2. Epee then found itself down 4-2 against a balanced Tufts squad. The Big Red came back with three consecutive victories to win and finish ninth.
Individually Freshmen Zach Silversmith and Benjamin Jaeger finished fifth and sixth in the individual sabre tournament with Sophomore Mike Fotinatos finishing fifth in the foil tournament.
As a team, the Big Red finished third behind Northwestern and (one squad place behind) University of Michigan.
