The Men’s Fencing Club hosted Rutgers, Lafayette and RPI this past sunday at the Stifel Fencing Salle. Cornell defeated all three to improve its season record to 8-0. The foil and sabre squads remained undefeated as well, with foil looking to threepeat as MACFA champions this year. The Big Red will return to action on February 12th at Drew University against MACFA’s B region which includes SIT, NJIT, USMA, Hunter College, and Yeshiva University.

To start the day on Sunday, the Big Red were pitted against an in state rival, RPI. The club team put up a good fight, but the Red swept sabre with a 9-0 score. Foil and epee both won their rounds with Junior Dave Smith winning all his bouts in Epee, to finish RPI in a final score of 20-7.

In the next round, Cornell was pitted against Lafayette University. It was a tough match with epee losing 6-3 to a strong Lafayette squad. Sabre and Foil won again with scores of 6-3 and 8-1. Senior Foilists Trevor Ertel, Nick Heiner and Sophomore Sabrist Matt Joe all went 3-0 against their opponents. The Red defeated the Leapards 17-10.

In the last round of the day, Cornell faced a tough Rutgers squad who finished 3rd in MACFA just last season. Our epee squad fell 6-3, but the sabre and foil roared back with wins of 6-3 and 8-1 respectively. This bodes well for the Red as they head towards MACFA and USACFC championships. Rutgers Sabre was the national champion last year, while the Red finished third.

Correction regarding my Rutgers bout–final score was 3-4 in priority, not 3-5 as listed.
