On March 5th, The Cornell Men’s Fencing Team traveled to Johns Hopkins for the MACFA Championships. The team competed against 14 other teams; a mix of varsity and club. The team placed 5th overall, winning 84 out of 124 bouts.

The foil team, Owen Sconzo (11-3), Michael Mauer (10-4), and Milo Wittenberg (8-5), and the epee team, Grant Uebele (8-6), Kevin Wang (11-3), and Nathaniel Taylor (9-4), performed incredibly well, with both teams placing 5th. The sabre team, David Karasz (3-11), Chris Mulvaney (2-12), and Eric Sun (8-6), placed 11th. Four out of nine fencers qualified for the individual competitions to finish the day. Grant and Kevin finished 13th and 14th, respectively. Michael placed 14th after losing to Owen in a hard-fought bout. Owen placed 2nd in an incredible performance.

Michael commented on the success of the team as well as its youth: “For most of the team, this was their first MACFA championships. Nevertheless, the guys took on historically strong varsity programs like Johns Hopkins and NJIT. Despite lacking experience, we still matched our previous year’s finish of 5th, so I’m excited to see what we can do with a bit more experience.”
Chris shared a similar thought, “The team that competed last weekend was almost entirely underclassmen, who show great promise for the future of this team. After losing some fencers after last semester, including the entire starting lineup for sabre, placing 5th overall was an astounding performance.”

Kevin praised the performance of the team, saying “Two fifth place finishes greatly exceeded our expectations. All squads fenced well, including some great individual performances, such as Owen’s 2nd individual finish and Eric Sun’s eight wins. It was a long day, and we pushed through to the end with strong finishes all around."

The team will finish the season on April 8th and 9th at the Club Fencing Championships in Lansing, Michigan.
