This past weekend, Cornell saber fencer Zach Silversmith attended the North Atlantic Sectional Qualifiers to participate in this years Summer Nationals event.  Fencing in both the Junior (U19) and Senior Events, Zach earned a 3rd place finish out of 41 and 40 fencers respectively, the latter earning him a USFA ranking of B2010.
In the Senior event, Zach started strong by going undefeated in his pool, and was promoted easily to the direct elimination tableau.  Receiving a BYE in the first round, he swiftly defeated his first opponent, 15-1, and continued on, winning his next two DE’s, both by a 15-11 margin.  Securing a place in the top 4, Zach eventually fell to Adam Austin 15-13.  Had two of the three A-rated fencers made top-8, Zach would have earned his B at this competition as well, but qualified nonetheless to fence in the Senior Men’s Saber event at Summer Nationals.
Moving into the second day, Zach fenced in the Junior qualifiers.  Starting slowly, he went 4-2 in his pool, seeding him 10th going into direct eliminations.  He won his first bout 15-11 against B-rated Amir Ameli, elevating him to the top 16.  Deftly defeating his next opponent 15-4, Zach moved into the top 8, and drew A-rated Sam Austin, brother of his only loss on the previous day.
Zach found himself in dire straits early in the bout, only having scored one touch to Austin’s eight at the break.  After regaining his composure and focusing, Zach quickly brought the score back from 1-8 to 13-14 in the second period.  Having thrown off his opponent’s momentum, Zach tied the score, and finished with a simple riposte off the line to win 15-14.  This excellent comeback meant another Summer National qualification for Zach and a well deserved B2010 for his 3rd place finish.
