On November 1, 2o09 the Cornell Men’s Fencing Club competed at Temple University in the annual Temple Open, widely considered the largest collegiate fencing competetition in the country.
The Big Red had great finishes all around. Nick Heiner, sophomore foilist, broke the top ten with a tenth place finish out of 101 competitors. Freshmen Benjamin Jaeger and Zach Silversmith had good results in sabre with 18th and 24th place finishes respectively (out of 82). Sophomore Mike Fotinatos and Freshman Dave Smith each tied for 22nd in foil and epee.
Sophomore epeeists Bryan Mills, Wen Xuan Lim and Tim Gao all had respectable results in Men’s Epee with finishes of 51st, 64th and 71st (out of 96). Each improved from last year’s tournament. Sophomore Alex Lo finished 84th in his first major collegiate competition after sitting out his freshman year.
This tough competition will act as a springboard as Cornell tries to improve on its 4th place finish in MACFA in the 08-09 season.
The Cornell Women’s Varsity Team also participated in the event.  Foilist Rebecca Hirschfeld placed 3rd, bringing home the highest finish out of any Cornell fencer.  Epeeists Tasha Hall, Christie Robinson, and saberist Audrey Speer all made the top 8, while many other Big Red Women’s fencers finished in the top 16 or top 32.
