Congratulations to all members of the class of 2015! There will be optional meetings for those interested in joining the team this fall, where you can meet some of the Men’s and Women’s fencers and get information about our program. We will have a table set up on Rawlings Green outside of Appel Commons on Sunday August 21st from 5PM-7PM.

The Cornell Big Red traveled to Chicago, Illinois to fence in the US Collegiate Club National Fencing tournament.  Both the foil and saber squads fenced to a bronze medal finish in a field of roughly 36 teams from around the country.  Sophomore Zach Silversmith was also able to secure a second place finish despite serious injuries in the final round.

 The Big Red fencers drove down to the College of William and Mary to fence at the MACFA Championship tournament, competing against 12 other varsity and club programs.  The defending champion foil squad of Nick Heiner ’12, Trevor Ertel ’12, and Mike Fotinatos ’12, were able to secure another top finish, bringing home their second consecutive MACFA foil title.  The saber squad, consisting of Zach Silversmith ’13, Benjamin Jaeger ’13, and Jason Kowalski ’13, narrowly missed the bronze medal position, falling short only by indicators to Rutgers.

 The Cornell Men’s Fencing team travelled to Steven’s Institute of Technology for their second MACFA meet of the season to face against Haverford College, William and Mary, Lafayette College and University of Virginia.  The Big Red handily defeated the latter three schools, only falling to defending MACFA champion Haverford.  The saber squad (Zach Silversmith ’13, Benjamin Jaeger ’13, and Matt Joe ’14) went undefeated on the day, securing a number of impressive victories against strong competitors.

The Big Red fencing team showed some unprecedented success this weekend, going undefeated in the first MACFA event.  Edging out five schools, Cornell readily defeated Hunter, Drew and Maryland and pulled out thrilling 14-13 victories against Rutgers and Stevens.  It is notable that Hunter, Drew and Stevens are all Varsity programs

Three Big Red fencers drove down to Vassar College this weekend to fence in the Attila Petschauer Open, one of the largest local saber events in the Northeast region.  With 56 competitors, the A2 competition marked a solid start of the season for Mike Fotinatos ’12, Zach Silversmith ’13, and freshman newcomer Matt Joe.  Fotinatos, though primarily a foilist, enjoys fencing saber recreationally and entered the event.

On the weekend of 6/19-20, Mike Fotinatos, Zach Silversmith, and Benjamin Jaeger traveled to Brandeis University to compete in the 22nd annual USFA Pomme de Terre Competition. In the Saber open, Zach went undefeated in his pool, and finished 10th out of 55 after falling in a close bout 13-15 to the eventual 1st place winner.  Benjamin placed 33rd in saber and also competed in the Epee E & under.   Having only fenced epee a few times, he displayed a comedy of saber moves, winning four DE’s and finished 3rd out of 60.  His bronze medal finish earned him an E2010.

This past weekend, Cornell saber fencer Zach Silversmith attended the North Atlantic Sectional Qualifiers to participate in this years Summer Nationals event.  Fencing in both the Junior (U19) and Senior Events, Zach earned a 3rd place finish out of 41 and 40 fencers respectively, the latter earning him a USFA ranking of B2010.

The Cornell Men’s Fencing Club traveled to Swarthmore College in Philadelphia to compete against 41 other schools from around the country. Over the course of the first day, our three squads all fared well, all placing in the top 16 going into direct eliminations. Individually, Sophomore Mike Fotinatos in foil, Freshmen Benjamin Jaeger and Zach Silversmith in sabre, and Sophomore Bryan Mills in epee all qualified for the first round of individuals. Mike, Benjamin and Zach all advanced to the final round with strong performances in their respective pools.
